The increase of violent crime & shootings in Calgary , have out-spilled and surged an increase of crime activities into Calgary Chinatown.
Located in the gateway to Downtown Calgary, Chinatown is the oldest community in the core district; She has retained much of her 100 years of historic buildings, culture and aged residents. Chinatown has the highest percentage of senior residents of 32%, which is 22% above the Calgary average.
In the last five years, Chinatown had a drastic increase of growth in crimes of 9% above the National Average. Although the type of crimes are mostly Social disorder, the correlation of the increase of drug addicted homeless from the neighboring Downtown community and Drug Safe Injection sites is becoming a reason of high and increasing concern for the Chinatown residents .
The recent case in Edmonton Chinatown of 2 fatally beaten Chinese seniors by a drug addicted offender, was the last motivator for Calgary Chinatown to put in place a Community Crime Prevention Strategy before it escalates into the worst tragedy.
Chinatown community is low priority by Calgary Police (CPS) Patrol is partly due to the lack of reporting to the CPS system, thus giving incorrect statistics for their decision making. But Chinatown believes in unity , we need the help of the government and the partnership with the Police (CPS) .
Together to empower Community effort ; Together to innovate technological crime prevention solution ; and Together to love thy neighbor to find a solution to the homeless situation and the mental illness of drug addiction in our society.
Chinatown has a strong culture of family unity; and Chinatown is also a strong resource of technological partnerships.
Calgary Chinatown Community Crime Prevention Strategy
is made up of 2 approaches :
[ A.I. Chinatown ] technology &
[ ai (=爱=Love) Chinatown ] togetherness;
thus { A.R.T. (Art, Relating with Technology) for Crime Prevention in Public Realm }
The two goals of the Chinatown Community Crime Prevention Strategy are :
(1) Eliminate Drug trafficking in Chinatown by [ A.I. Chinatown ] ; technological solution of reporting crime activities; multilingual hotline to report crime activities.
(2) Solution to Homeless Transient in Chinatown by [ ai (=爱=Love ) Chinatown ] ; social service solution ;
partnership & programmes for solution to mental health of homeless transient.
The three pillars in implementing the strategy are :
(a) All Community Together : community support neighborhood patrol & multilingual hotline ;
(b) Technology coverage : Sky net of Cameras ; Mobile Patrol & Mobile instant data transfer to the Police;
(c) Media & Gov.(CPS) coverage :
To promote community crime prevention partnership & also to repel criminal intent into Chinatown;
